Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Thiem
Siemens AG
Chapter 10, 43
Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Thiem heads the research group “Infrastructure Operation” at Siemens Technology. His team develops concepts and methods for the integration of renewable energies in onsite energy systems and energy cells. The methods are implemented in tools using optimization algorithms and artificial intelligence and tested in the field. The focus here is on multi-modal energy systems, that is, the question of how best to exploit synergies between different sectors. He significantly coined the term “multi-modal energy system” during his doctorate at the Technical University of Munich, where he worked on the optimal energy system design of multi-modal onsite energy systems.
Sebastian Thiem has a background in engineering and studied at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and at Purdue University and the University of California at Berkeley. After his doctorate, he worked, in addition to other roles, as a senior key expert at Siemens Corporate Technology.
