Prof. Stefan Niessen

Siemens AG

Chapter 18

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Niessen MBA is heading the technology field “Sustainable Energy and Infrastructure” in the central research organization at Siemens AG since 2016. With research groups at various locations in Germany, Austria, Portugal, China, and the USA, he develops simulation and optimization methods for the design and operation of multimodally coupled energy systems of buildings, plants, cities, and countries.
By considering the coupling of the supply of electricity, heating, cooling, motive power, drinking water, and chemical forms of energy, costs can be reduced, environmental efficiency improved, and new flexibility potentials raised. Parallel to his work at Siemens, he holds the professorship for Technology and Economics of Multimodal Energy Systems at TU Darmstadt.
After completing his studies and doctorate at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, Stefan Niessen was part of the core team responsible for setting up the European Energy Exchange (EEX) during its first six years. He acquired the necessary economic knowledge for this with an MBA at Duke University. He then worked for a French plant manufacturer for ten years as head of international marketing and head of research and development.
