Dr. Michael Schwan is Head of Power Technologies International at Siemens AG. The Power Technologies International department offers strategic and energy technical planning services for energy systems. After graduating from the Saarland University in Saarbrucken with a master’s degree in electrical engineering (focus: energy technology) and a subsequent PhD thesis, he started his professional career as Head of the System Studies Group at Forschungsgemeinschaft für elektrische Anlagen und Stromwirtschaft e. V. (FGH e. V., a non-profit research association of the electricity supply industry) in Mannheim, and then joined Siemens as a power grid planner. Later, as Head of Business Development, he mainly supported and expanded the international business before taking on the role of Head of Power System Consulting.
Dr. Michael Schwan specializes in the structure and planning of power transmission and distribution systems with a special focus on service reliability. Furthermore, the energy transition, including its drivers and impact on the systems and the various facets of the transformation of the global supply infrastructure, has become another major focus of interest during the course of many years. He is an active member of various national and international expert committees (e. g., VDE ETG, CIGRE, and IEC) and is the author of numerous publications and lectures.
